The Fastest Growing Ride-Hailing App in Latin America

Originally founded in Greece in 2011, BEAT (part of the FREE NOW Group since 2017) is the fastest growing ride-hailing app in Latin America. ΒΕΑΤ currently operates in six countries including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Greece in Europe. Every day, the BEAT app is used by over 19+ million users and 600,000+ drivers.

BEAT’s mission is to create technology for a better urban life, driving deep connections with the underserved communities across the region. As a ride-hailing app, ΒΕΑΤ is focused on making urban transportation more efficient, affordable, and safe for its passengers, whilst providing new economic opportunities to its drivers.

Jean-Baptiste Dodane, Product Manager for Fraud, Safety, and Identity at BEAT said “Safety is a critical consideration, both in terms of the physical safety of our users, and in terms of the technical aspect of using the mobile application itself such as booking a ride or making a payment.”

As ΒΕΑΤ expanded into new markets, it wanted to bulletproof its fraud shields even more.  BEAT wanted to ensure its users were kept safe, thus the vendor needed to deliver against three priorities:

1. Accuracy – the solution needed to be extremely accurate in detecting malicious devices and the malicious applications running on them.

2. Customer obsessed – the solution had to be compliant with global privacy standards by protecting both the end users and BEAT’s data.

3. Flexible – the vendor’s technology had to be able to grow with BEAT as they expanded into new markets and protected new app features.

In the resulting proof of concept, SHIELD outperformed competing vendors both in terms of their accuracy in detecting malicious applications and their relevant industry expertise. Dodane commented, “SHIELD outperformed both our in-house and competitor solutions, consistently detecting malicious devices and applications - SHIELD is by far the most accurate solution on the market.”

"Throughout the proof of concept, DeviceSHIELD’s risk intelligence consistently detected malicious users across multiple accounts and was the only technology that could tell the exact moment a good user had turned bad. Ultimately, this will enable my team to make faster, better decisions to keep our users and drivers safe."

Better Data = Better Decisions

Following the proof of concept, two of SHIELD's key differentiators really stood out for BEAT. The first was the SHIELD ID - a persistent device identifier that helps businesses detect multiple users on the same device. The second was SHIELD Sentinel – a unique feature that continuously profiles risk across a user session.

Dodane commented, “We were impressed with how throughout the proof of concept SHIELD helped my team make faster, better decisions to keep our users and drivers safe. SHIELD’s risk intelligence consistently detected malicious users across multiple accounts and was the only technology that could tell the exact moment a good user had turned bad.”

A need for speed

The process of booking a BEAT ride is designed to be both simple and efficient. The entire experience from booking the ride to making final payment is relatively short, meaning there is a limited window to detect fraudulent behaviour. As such, BEAT needed a vendor that could deliver risk intelligence in real time.

Dodane commented, “We have a very small window in which to make decisions that ultimately affect the safety of our users. The faster we can access and assess risk intelligence, the faster we can take action to detect and block malicious users and devices – this is a critical factor in selecting our risk intelligence partner.”

Speed not only matters in terms of blocking fraud, but also in terms of customer service. “SHIELD’s service and responses are not only efficient, but they are as personalized as I can imagine. They have a team dedicated to clear and efficient communications – this is a real differentiator for us,” said Dodane.

Making BEAT the most trusted form of urban mobility in the world

As BEAT looks to roll out new initiatives in the coming months, safety remains an important consideration. Dodane commented, “As devices are updated with new features and services, fraudsters adapt their attack methods. No matter how advanced these may be, SHIELD has demonstrated that they are always one step ahead.”

Dodane concluded, “We are a technology company driving urban mobility. We want users, both drivers and passengers, to feel safer choosing BEAT over any other Ride-Hailing Platform in the world. We are definitely looking forward to collaborating more with SHIELD to help build trust and safety in the BEAT brand.”
